MY FOUR PILLARS FOR HAPPINESS + WELLBEING

I sat down in front of my computer the other day wanting to write a bit of content for the blog but I just couldn't get myself to write a word. I felt cluttered and was still holding on to a bad experience I'd had earlier that day. I felt totally unbalanced and negative, truly unsure how to fix it. When I'm in that state of mind, I jump from thought to thought, it's impressive what the mind can do if you let it control you. In my over-thinking rampage, I remembered the words of a wise friend, she said to me: "Don't give your critical self the full stage, but gently show her the way out..." it was then that I remembered the four pillars.

The four pillars are just that, four important things I do that help support my happiness and overall wellbeing. I feel my brightest, most full when I'm implementing these things into my daily life. Keep in mind that different things work for different people, I am sharing my formula with you guys because I have found it to be extremely helpful and that is why I'm here, to share and be of service in any way I can. Let's dive right in!

NUTRITION

Propper nutrition is the key and provides so many benefits, in my opinion, this is the most important aspect of them all. I feel my best when I'm nourishing my body with healthy, nutrient-dense foods and specially when I am tracking macronutrients. For more information on tracking macros please click HERE. A nutritious diet can benefit the health of your heart, keep your bones strong and give you lots of that energy you need to kick ass! Not only that but eating a healthy, balanced diet can also help keep your brain sharp and fight disease. Aside from these amazing benefits, it is much easier to reach your fitness goals when you're giving your body whole foods. That's not to say, you're not allowed to eat the foods you like, or indulge every once in a while, I sure do! It's just about finding the balance that works for your lifestyle and the formula that keeps you feeling your best. I'd like to add just how important it is to stay hydrated also, water is literally your best friend. If you're feeling fatigued, notice a couple more wrinkles or aren't sure what is making your tummy feel upset, chances are that you're not drinking enough water. I try to keep up with my water intake, it's not always easy but I feel my best when I'm drinking water every hour! Try it!

MEDITATION

I discovered meditation a bit late in life, I wish I had started practicing earlier but now that I have started to reap the benefits of the practice, I am so grateful to have finally found it. People tend to get a bit intimidated by the word "meditation" and it's understandable but I can say with confidence that it's not difficult to start, all you have to do is set aside 10 minutes, grab your phone and there you go! On your way to a more peaceful, centered you! I use an application called Headspace, they are amazing and you can try them for free. They offer basic guided mediations, only ten minutes and the app is very user friendly. They have really cute videos that help explain more in depth what the exercises are about, which I love because I'm a visual person. Show me a little movie and I'm hooked! I only have great things to say, they rock and I'm so glad to have found the app. I really recommend it, it doesn't take up a lot of my time and the more I do it, the better I feel in so many ways. This is a HUGE part of what helps keep me sharp, in tune with myself and get this, helps me sleep better too!

EXERCISE

If you exercise regularly, you know just how amazing you feel after a good workout. This is one of those things, once you start working out and get to feel those endorphins and Wonder Women like feels, it's hard not to want to get that sweat on again. Personally, I started working out (several years ago) first and foremost as a way to battle depression. I was going through a rough patch in my life at the time, my doctor suggested medication to get me back on track but I refused and asked for the next best thing. She said exercise would offer tremendous benefits and so a few days later my friend Alexandra and I were heading to our first Crossfit class together. I am so thankful for what exercise did for me specially during that period but fast forward a few months later, there I was, back to myself and in the best shape of my life. Today, I'm still very much into fitness but admittedly, not being as consistent as I want, I know this is something I need to work on, I feel amazing when I move my body and stay active, it is essential to my happiness hence why I've not felt 100% like myself lately. If you are not a gym person, try the Get Fit & Thick App! I use it when I don't feel like going to the gym and love how easy it is to follow along, it is built for women by women! They also have an amazing plant based nutrition program that I highly recommend, click here for the Plant Based Power Up!

READING

You gotta feed your brain wholesomeness as well, you just have to. I feel the need to continue to learn and explore things even within myself. I really enjoy self help and self discovery reads as well as articles that encourage new ways of thinking. I have this innate desire to keep evolving as a human being, I want to be challenged. I feel like the older I get, the more questions I have about myself and the universe around me. I also want to be the best version of me that I can possibly be so I quite enjoy these types of books at the moment. I believe that reading is the best exercise to keep the mind sharp. Also, with all the technology around us, I find it comforting to hold on to a nice book, turn the page and feel the texture of the paper within my grasp. I believe it's important to be able to touch and feel. For example, in our home office, we have a digital desk where we have our computers and hard drives, but also have a lovely analog desk that my uncle built for us. It is made out of wood and it sits completely opposite from the other desk, this is where my color pencils, paint and equipment live, a place where I can use my hands and my sense of touch. I find this very important because I'm not comfortable with giving all of myself to digital, I work with my hands, I take photographs and love seeing things outside of a computer screen, its a great mixture of both.

There you have it guys! These are four core things that I try to implement in my life, and when I do, I feel my absolute best. There are times, like now, when I'm not doing a terrific job at balancing these things but we all have those moments, it's important to remember that taking time for yourself is allowed, if that comes in the form of letting go for a little bit, then so be it. The key is to be in tune with your own needs and get yourself back on track if you slip up! The last thing I want to add is that keeping a positive attitude is really the base of it all, it doesn't matter what you're after, choosing to see the good in the situations you're in is the most important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. I believe wholeheartedly that positive will attract more of that, and so does the opposite. Nothing turns me off more than a constant complainer, a constant blamer and someone that is content with that way of thinking. I believe in doing, and doing what we do with kindness first. Life opens up when you do! I hope that you've enjoyed this read and that this post is helpful in some way, I love sharing the things that make me happy. Thanks for being here guys, I will see you next week!
